The roots of FMPG can be easily traced to International Doctors in Alcoholics Anonymous (IDAA). The larger and more seasoned organization of IDAA formed in 1949 and the founders of FMPG were already active members of IDAA. However, the physicians from Florida had a vision for developing a regionally based organization that would continue to carry the message of hope to those physicians in Florida that were still suffering in silence and isolation from the disease of addiction. Subsequently, FMPG has held annual conferences over the course of the past three decades and has also encouraged and developed support groups across the State of Florida.
FMPG has maintained a vibrant recovery community and program of attraction and support to impaired physicians and their families in Florida for over a quarter of a century. However, over the past decade, the organization has revised the bylaws and evolved to include all health care providers. FMPG is no longer limited to physician membership. Anyone that provides medical services under license/certification by the Florida Department of Health or the Florida Certification Board is welcome to join FMPG.
As stated in our background, our members are diverse and represent a range of health care professionals from message therapists to surgeons. Subsequently, the members now include a variety of healthcare disciplines, for example; Audiologist, Certified Respiratory Therapist, Physical Therapist, Paramedic, Radiologic Technologist, Nurses (L.P.N., R.N. ARNP), and Mental Health Professionals (Psychologists, Social Workers, Mental Health Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapists). There is no annual dues for membership at this time. However, membership is achieved by attending the annual conference and indicating your desire to be a member The common bond is that the members are dedicated to strengthening their recovery experience through fellowship and support of one another. Many members identify with traditional 12-step programs of recovery. In this regard, they recognize that their educational and professional status as health care providers does no insulate them from the disease of addiction.

The Florida Medical Professionals Group (FMPG) is a special interest recovery group that has been providing a safe space and support for impaired health care professionals and their families for over three decades. FMPG is unique in its mission to provide support, resources, training, and meetings to those medical professionals and their families who are on the path to recovery from Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Chemical Dependency. With alliance and support of 12-step programs, our statewide presence, family program, annual conference, and local meetings; FMPG is able to fill the gap for medical professionals who need a safe space to practice and fellowship in their recovery.
